Discover CEO
Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM)
Since 2006, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been an integral part of CEO Club. The campaign began when a family member of Kelly Whiting, a CEO alumni, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through hard work and dedication, she formed the philanthropy department and was able to raise and donate $10,000 in the first year. Ever since then the philanthropy department has made a conscious effort to raise awareness and money during the month of October. In 2007, Nicole Waldow took over for Kelly and was able to raise $8,700. The following year, with the Jonathan Green as the new chairman, the club planned several events and activities to raise funds and awareness. These included a 5K run/walk, a silent auction, as well as dorm storming to collect cans, hold a 50/50 raffle, and sell breast cancer awareness bracelets, car magnets, and t-shirts. By contacting the different departments of Clarkson, other student organizations, and the local community we were better able to reach our goals. In 2008, even during the economic recession, they were able to raise and donate over $4000. Also, in 2008, BCAM was awarded the best fundraising idea/event out of all the CEO chapters nationwide. Now with Gerald Williams and Jake McCrindle as the new co-chairs of philanthropy, they have big plans for the month of October and the club is very excited about donating more funds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. A second goal is to raise more awareness, which we are able to do through our extensive fund raising efforts and promotional advertising. In 2005, breast cancer caused 502,000 deaths worldwide, accounting for 7% of cancer deaths and almost 1% of all deaths. We should all take a minute to sit back and think of those families who are affected each day by this disease. Our hope with this program is to give those who are struggling with breast cancer something to fight for, and to recognize those who have fought the battle and survived. We have proven year after year, together as a team, we can truly make a difference. If you are interested in helping us out, please send an email to contact@ClarksonCEO.com.
